First School

Our First School is situated on the Percy Park Road site, a short walk from the Middle School and Senior School site.

Kings Priory First School houses 420 pupils aged between 4 and 9. There are three mixed ability classes per year group. It is a warm, happy and exciting hub of learning where our pupils are encouraged to explore, read and have fun whilst acquiring new skills. Our values of respect, tolerance and friendship are actively encouraged from the moment pupils join us. We have developed strong links with many of our local nurseries including Sir James Knott Nursery School, however, children begin their education with us from a variety of settings and there is not an individual Nursery that is an automatic feeder to our school.

Situated in the heart of the conservation area in Tynemouth on the North East coast, the school is close to the ancient Priory, the mouth of the River Tyne and to the beach. This historical setting provides a stimulating learning opportunity for pupils. Regular trips into the local community enrich the pupils' learning of the school curriculum.

Bespoke Early Years Reception unit

We offer a full Early Years and Foundation stage experience where we operate a free-flow system centred around the belief that play is extremely important to development. This is underpinned by our outside and inside learning curriculum. This allows the pupils to explore the wider world whilst in a safe and nurturing environment. Our Reception team consists of extremely experienced and inspiring teachers and support assistants. If you would like to see what our unit looks like please contact us on 0191 5802700 to arrange a tour. A member of staff would always be willing to help you with any queries you have.

Curriculum

The Curriculum in the First School is underpinned by our whole school Curriculum Intent. We have the privilege of being responsible for the start of a child’s journey here at Kings Priory School and our curriculum is intended to inspire our pupils to want to learn and enjoy the time in the classroom and school. The breadth of curriculum in Reception to Year 4 allows us to ensure pupils experience a wide range of subjects and additional learning opportunities which in turn prepares them fully for their next stage of education. Through our curriculum we further develop our pupils core skills of Communication, Reading and Problem Solving.

For details of our curriculum please see our Curriculum website by clicking here and also take a look at the welcome leaflets at the bottom of this page.

Chapter system

Once a child enters Kings Priory School they are allocated a Chapter which remains with them throughout their education. This system lays the foundation for a child’s identity within their Chapter. Once every half term, Chapter activities take place during a morning or afternoon which may include team building, sports and art activities and Charity fundraising. Children work in their Chapter groups, either split vertically or by Year group and are given opportunities to engage with different staff members across the school.

Student Voice and Council

We actively encourage our pupils to work with us in shaping their education and one of the ways in which we do this is through the First School Student council. This body consists of Chapter representatives from all year groups voted in by their peers. The Student Council meets on a regular basis to discuss issues raised by their peers and works closely with the PTA to provide equipment and support for the benefit of the pupils’ learning and social growth.
